Page 73 of Keeping Time

Panel 1: Daniel's mother, Emi, stands in the foreground, arms crossed over her chest. She turns to look at Daniel over her shoulder. Daniel, for his part, is slumped in front of his laptop, holding his head up with his hand.

Emi says, "That's no excuse." Daniel tries to speak, but is cut off by Emi snapping, "Sit up straight." Daniel tries again, now able to get the words out: "Mom. This is why I asked you to wait another couple of days before you came over."

Panel 2: Emi motions towards herself, her expression incredulous as she asks, "What, so I’m the bad guy for wanting to see my son? After he left me alone for six years while my whole life fell apart?"

Panel 3: Daniel is now sitting up straight. His face is dispassionate as he sits for a second in silence.

Panel 4: Daniel looks down, his expression somewhere between resigned, exhausted, and guilty. He answers, "I’ll get this place cleaned up tonight."

Panel 5: The panel pulls out to reveal more of Daniel's living room. Much of the large furniture is in place, but there are still a few moving boxes around. Emi returns to her default resting position, her arms once again folded across herself. She scowls and says, "I only wanted to make sure your father didn’t set you up in some condemned rat's nest. At least this area seems nice enough."

Daniel doesn't say anything and simply listens. In front of him, his laptop appears to be open to an email inbox.
